Bonnie Schneider
As a result of graduating from an Bachelor of Music program (Boston University in 1963) and then watching the liberal arts process in my teaching career (Brown University, 1971-75), I am an advocate for education that integrates studying the arts with study of many different subjects. This is not surprising coming from an ethnomusicologist with an MA in 1967 and earned a Ph.D. at UCLA. The program in ethnomusicology that I joined at UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) sits comfortably in a department of music at the College of Letters and Science. The possibility of pursuing multiple interests is something I really like. I am very passionate about teaching both students in the undergraduate level (majors and non-majors), for whom I have written three books - Music in India: A Study of Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically as well as Music in Japan: Experiencing Cultural Expression, Music) and graduate students. Also, I rotate periods during which I focus on primarily teaching with periods when I add administrative work to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98; Chair of all the Deans at the College of Letters and Science 1994-1998, Chair of the Group in Asian Studies from 1999 and currently Chair of the Department of Music again).
